THE SCOUT CHAPLAIN'S ORIENTATION WORKSHOP
A course on the Catholic Church and Scouting for seminarians and new
Scout Chaplains
PURPOSE
To acquaint seminarians and new Scout leaders with:
- The purpose and programs of Scouting and its achievement through
partner organizations.
- Scouting as a viable, proven and contemporary program to meet the
challenge of the nineties--"Scouting...the Better Life."
- The reasons and needs for Catholic involvement in Scouting.
- The religious, vocational, educational, and ecumenical aspects of
Scouting.
- The Scouting apostolate as a meaningful program of involvement with
others that can extend the social and ecumenical outreach of the church
and thereby meet the aims and goals of many concerned priests.
- To educate, motivate and gain clergy support for the Scouting apostolate
and their need to give leadership in this area through their interest
and encouragement to those laymen and laywomen who are involved or could
be involved in Scouting.
PRIME RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORKSHOP
The Scouter development chairman, in cooperation with the chairman and
Scout chaplain of the Catholic Committee on Scouting, has primary responsibility
for initiating, scheduling, and conducting the Scout Chaplain's Orientation
Workshop.
In carrying out this responsibility, the Scouter Development chairman
involves other key Scouters and local personnel in conducting the Scout
chaplain's orientation workshop.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This workshop should be conducted annually for seminarians who are within
2 years of their ordination to the priesthood. It should also be conducted
for new Scout Chaplains and interested clergy as opportunity permits.
MAJOR SEMINARY INVOLVEMENT
Contact with rectors of major seminaries within the area should be made
regarding seminary involvement and use of their facilities for the workshop.
HANDOUT MATERIAL
Each participant should be given a packet of supporting literature available
from Relationships Division, Boy Scouts of America, 1325 West Walnut Hill
