2017 Scouting in the Catholic Church
The National Catholic Committee (NCCS) on Scouting is hosting the ”Scouting in the Catholic Church” conference at the Philmont Training Center from July 16-22, 2017. The conference focuses not only on the mission of the NCCS, but also involves participants in adult faith formation and an understanding of the concept of ”Scouting as youth ministry.” It is designed for any adult interested in using Scouting as a program of Catholic youth ministry to include Scout chaplains, priests, permanent deacons, (arch)diocesan or parish youth ministers; diocesan, regional and national Catholic committee leadership and members.
The Philmont Training Center (PTC) is also an excellent family vacation spot. PTC offers a full, organized program for every member of the family from infants to spouses. Family members are joined by others in their age group to participate in carefully designed, age-appropriate programs under the leadership of trained and experienced Philmont staff.
Please share this information with members of your (arch) diocese Catholic Committee on Scouting, Catholic Scouters, COR's, chaplains, priests, permanent deacons, and youth ministers. The 2017 Scouting in the Catholic Church course is scheduled for July 16 - 22, 2017 at the Philmont Training Center located at the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. The conference brings together religious and lay participants with varying experience in Scouting and the Catholic faith. The goal of the conference is to help the participants understand how Scouting is youth ministry and how to use the information in their dioceses or eparchies when promoting Catholic Scouting with Scouters, priests, and youth ministers.
The course is structured to explore the four components of lay apostolate formation consisting of leadership, holiness, conversion and worship. In addition, an integral part of this experience is the NCCS' National Catholic Leadership Development for Scouting (NCLD) format of bible readings, reflection, and small-group discussion, which will provide participants with insight as to why a Catholic Scouter is called to the lay apostolate, and how to deliver a NCLD program. The course advisor facilitates the component discussion from a catechism perspective. Presentations and discussions explain how NCCS and Scouting view and fulfill their parts of the component. Discussion, readings, and reflections using the Renewing the Vision booklet help the participants gain knowledge from a youth minister's perspective.
Participants and families may attend Mass each evening at the Philmont Catholic chapel with crews starting or ending their mountain treks, Philmont staff, and local residents.
In addition to the knowledge gained and the experiences shared during the week, you will go home certified to facilitate the National Catholic Leadership Development program and have the opportunity to earn the Jerusalem Cross Award for bringing what you learned back to your diocese.
